Science fiction presented in a drawn format. Most people these days yell cartoon or comic book and thumb their noses at it. Manga (pronounced – Mahn – ga) is actually more sophisticated at times and the panels are more like windows on one large moving scene. Comics have isolated action that has a hint of flow and manga has true flow. The story takes place in the not so distant future. Man has conquered the immediate are of space including putting a colony on the moon. However, like the days of earth bound humans, garbage has also made its way to the stars. Our primary protagonist is a member of a crew of glorified janitors who hunt down space debris and sell the scrap for profit. Despite the sci – fi back drop the story is primarily a human interest piece. Hachirota Hoshino is a rookie as the story begins with only 3 years of experience. He longs to be part of the Mars expeditionary force that begins to prepare to colonize the red planet. In this tale of one mans journey of self discovery, achievement and heartbreak we encounter many concepts and ideas that seem to be almost a repeat of events on our terrestrial bound history. A terrorist group that is anti – space exploration is in full operation. Health and health care are prime concerns as the true problems with living in space hit home for the miners and homesteaders on the moon as well as those that work in space. Lack of an atmosphere on our nearest satellite has lead to increased cancer, lack of gravitational effects have lead to surviving children born on the moon to be taller. Space station and debris collectors have to deal with early osteoporosis and certain mental disorders or space sickness as it is called. People afflicted with space sickness must go earthside and spend up to six months recuperating before heading back out and then must alter their diets and Learn how to deal with the pressures if they wish to keep earning a living. Don’t let anyone tell you a manga is just a fancy comic book. This is one of the best examples of why manga and even anime should be seriously considered as mediums for story telling. This tale harkens back to the days of Jules Verne and H.G.Wells. Aside from the fact that it is for a more mature audience (13 + is the rating on the book and anime) with language that can be harsh at times it is a well crafted tale. I recommend this one to anyone who is a true science fiction fan. I give it 5 out of 5 stars
